Buellton Is Our Town has endorsed a plan to reconfigure the Avenue of Flags that was proposed by BIOT steering committee members Peggy Brierton and Judi Stauffer, along with Dan Brierton.

According to Peggy, “Our plan is not wholly new — it builds upon ideas to redevelop the Avenue that have appeared in documents prepared by and for the City of Buellton since its incorporation”

The plan has been dubbed “The Curve” by the RBF & Associates, the Buellton Visioning Process consultants.

BIOT’S VISION for the

AVENUE OF FLAGS and DOWNTOWN DISTRICT

KEY ELEMENTS

OF THE BIOT-ENDORSED PLAN

Nestled between oak-studded hills and the majestic Santa Ynez River, Buellton sits at the heart of Santa Barbara County. Drawing inspiration from our innovative and diverse residents, Buellton is leading the way in how “Community” is defined: by providing a supportive and collaborative environment that cultivates a healthy and sustainable way of living, working, and playing.

To achieve this vision, we (residents, local government, business, and civic organizations) have joined together to develop a forward-looking community that is as beautiful, lasting, and inspiring as its natural surroundings based on the following core vision principles:

  1. BulletReduce roadway from 4 straight lanes to 2 curving lanes to calm traffic, promote a pedestrian-friendly downtown, and make better use of current medians and right of ways.

  2. BulletSell, trade or repurpose city-owned property (           ) for new commercial lots, public parking lots (           ), a Town Square with possible new Library/Life-Long Learning complex, and two roundabouts (       ) to calm traffic and create an entrance to the downtown shopping district.

  3. BulletAdd two new streets (            ) east of the Avenue of Flags to broaden the business district and add street frontage to commercial properties.

  4. BulletCreate a park (           ) at the site of the former Buellton Zoo and along Zaca Creek.

  5. BulletEstablish walking and biking trails and a pedestrian bridge over Hwy. 101 (            ) that connects neighborhoods to schools, the Riverview Park and the SYV Botanic Garden, and to the downtown area.
